Hippos Planting

Sally, Gail and Amy all fell in love with Cooper Oaks Hippos. All three bought the canvases but I don't think I've seen Gail or Amy's finished ones. But Sally kept on stitching and had these two pillows finished. I love the mini cording around the fabric insets.

It shows how even a relatively small canvas can be turned into a bigger pillow. Also, notice the interesting background. These pillows are just delightful!

Crabs

I've been reading about the TNNA show that was held in Baltimore last weekend. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend since I was at a parent orientation in Texas. But when I returned to the shop, I found that several finished crab pieces had come back.

Nancy's brick cover is absolutely beautiful. I love the color and the fantastic border. I reminds me of various wave patterns from older needlepoints.

We also got back Kappy's crab pillow. It's perfect for a beach house. Of course, in order to get finished items back in time for the current season, you must stitch one or two seasons ahead.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Helen brought in her finished Keep Calm and Carry On needlepoint. It's been framed simply so that her beautiful stitching remains the focus. Helen used a modified cashmere to create the brick like background.  As she went down, the bricks got bigger! It will be in her husband's office.

I really think this needs to be my mantra for the next week. As many of you know, I am in the process of moving and selling the store. Our house closes on the 26th of August and the store closes on August 31. In addition, I drove my youngest daughter to college last week in Texas -- it's a long drive.

On the trip, we stopped to see old friends. Both are avid needlepointers so it was really fun to see their finished pillows. I had forgotten how much I had liked some of those designs. And I love seeing framed and pillowed canvases!

In addition, since I did most of the driving, we stopped at two needlepoint stores on the way. I always love to see how other stores display their threads, canvases and finishing.

So of course, I plan to share the things I loved with Vanessa Holloschutz, the new owner of Ridgewood Needlepoint. I am so delighted that she has purchased the store and that staff of Ridgewood Needlepoint will continue to provide their expertise.

More African Inspired Canvases

Unfortunately, the pictures of these canvases do not do them justice. These are new designs from The Collection. And I saw them in an email just as I was starting to do the search for African inspired canvases.

These are unique. Each canvas features a planter or vase with the picture of a wild animal -- but the vase/planter is very formal as are the flower arrangements. If you love these, go to The Collection's website.

Another African Inspired Canvas

Needless to say, I was really intrigued by Rho's request for African inspired canvases. I love this one from HP. The sunsets in Africa are spectacular. And the combination of the animals and the sky is unforgetable. So, although an entirely different approach, this canvas would also be a great one if you were taking a trip to Africa.

The one below is one of various animal skins by JP.

African Inspired Canvases

Recently, a customer asked me to find some African inspired canvases. She was looking for something that suggested the essence of Africa as opposed to a canvas of a lion. I found these great African inpired canvases. I love the combination of textures! These are on #18 mesh and pretty detailed. The colors are fantastic!

Tallis Bag Finished

Our customers and our finishers have been really busy. This wonderful tallis bag came back earlier in July but I missed getting the picture up. The designs shows meaningful Judaic symbols and objects. It was beautifully stitched!

Barbara G's Pillow

Barbara did this cute baseball glove for a young nephew. She wanted it to be finished for her young nephew. But realistically, it doesn't make sense to have a pillow for a child's room done in silk or fancy trim. Instead, we used velvet but also a contrasting welt. THe pillow looks terrific!

Our Finishers Have Been Busy

Almost everyday, we've been receiving boxes from our finishers. These delightful ornaments are just a few of the finished items we've received.

The Washington DC ornament is a wonderful example of why you should use a professional finisher. Our customer came to us with a lumpily finished ornament; her friend finished it and she was horrified at the result. Needless to say, when a canvas has alreay been finished, the new finisher faces an even greater challenge. You don't know if the item was glued -- or if the canvas was cut too much. Fortunately, our expert finisher was able to redo the ornament. And our customer was thrilled.

Lottie's Rockefeller Center Stocking

This week we got Lottie's stocking back from the finisher. Lottie did a beautiful job stitching it. In addition, she had us make a name tag for it instead of putting her name on the top. I really think this is a great idea. It truly makes the stocking something that can be passed down. And this is truly an heirloom!

Barbara's Treasure Box

This delightful canvas can be made into a purse, a treasure box or even a toilet tissue holder. I love the colors because they are so tropical. Barbara did a lovely job stitching this canvas. It will make a lovely decorative accent wherever she puts it.

Sandra and Her Cushon

Sandra has an antique chair whose round cushion had worn out. She stitched this lovely floral design and then had us turn it into a round pillow. She chose to work in wool because it is an item that will get some wear.

Abstract Floral Design

This lovely pillow came back last week. I love the design because it is a little different. It really mae a colorful and delightful pillow. Unfortunately, I wasn't at the store when we opened the finishing box so I can't give the stitcher credit!

Renee's Pillow

Renee does lovely initial pillows as baby gifts. This one is just lovely. Renee has exquisite taste. She always brings her own trim and material for the finisher. That way she knows it will be what she has in mind.

They are such thoughtful baby gifts.

Judy's Roosters

Judy had one of her roosters made into a pillow a while ago. But she had extra fabric so when she finished the second rooster, she wanted to make it into a matching pillow. Unfortunately, she didn't have any trim left. So she cleverly sent a fabric only pillow that had been made with the same fabric and trim to our wonderful finisher.

When the two pillows came back, we really couldn't tell which one was the new one. I believe these have a place of honor in her kitchen.

Fabulous Bee Pillow

This lovely bee pillow was stitched by Joice. She used candlelight for the wings. (We just received a new shipment of this wonderful thread. It comes in a large spool -- 125 yards. We have all the colors but love the rainbow color the best. It's an opalescent white that lets the painting show through.) And she used fuzzy stuff for the body so it also glimmers a little.

When we sent it to the finisher, we requested that she used yellow and black cording and a gingham back. The effect is fantastic.

Halloween Cat

You may not know it but I really love Halloween. I love the autumn colors and kids dressed in costumes. I had this canvas made into a candy bag so that we could use it to serve the Halloween candy.

We have the canvas and the stitch guide in the store so if you love Halloween you might want to get it. It's on #13 mesh so it's relatively quick to stitch.
